People often ask why I went into Oral Surgery. My story starts when I decided to shadow a dentist. I really enjoyed the day and many of the patients explained how they were helped tremendously by the doctor. I had a gut feeling that this was a great career path for me. From the very beginning of dental school, I knew I had made the right decision. In my third and fourth year of dental school I was selected to go on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. This was a life changing experience. People walked large distances and waited on huge lines for care. The patients we treated were so thankful for our care. I felt fortunate to be in position to help others. While there I spent a lot of time with the Oral Surgeon who was part of our trip. He invited me to observe some procedures in the operating room once we returned home. I took him up on that offer and again my life changed. The procedures I saw and the changes made to patients’ lives were impressive. I knew from that point Oral Surgery would be a passion.
